Another Kadant Breakthrough in Doctoring Technology

For years, Kadant Web Systems has made the development of new doctoring holders and blade materials our number one priority. As a result, we have been able to gain valuable insight into several aspects of the doctoring process, and have used that knowledge to fuel our development efforts. The patented PLI Monitoring System is one such result of those efforts. The on-line system consists of separate sensors mounted to each of the doctor's air-loaded cylinders. The sensors' load cells read the PLI and transmit that information to a stand-alone, compact digital display. At any time, the system can display the PLI from either cylinder, or the total PLI. Papermakers can then adjust the load cylinders accordingly to achieve the correct PLI.

Blade Loading

Proper doctoring is critical to problem-free paper-making, and papermakers have long recognized the importance correct blade loading plays in obtaining good results. Blade loading is achieved through the loading mechanism, typically air cylinders or spring-loaded pressure devices. The loading results in applied pressure from the blade to the roll. When insufficient pressure is applied to the roll by the doctor blade, the result is inefficient doctoring and, sometimes, the infiltration of contaminants. Too much pressure causes increased wear of both the roll and the blade, either of which could lead to costly maintenance issues. Until the development of the PLI Monitoring System, there was no cost-efficient way to measure and monitor proper blade loading on-line.

DST Turnbuckle Installations

In the case of a DST turnbuckle installation, the sensors will indicate whether or not the load tube is properly positioned. In addition, individual load cells on each turnbuckle will allow for monitoring correct adjustment, and will indicate whether the turnbuckles are loose or unevenly adjusted.

Enhanced Productivity

By providing real-time status of the blade loading, the PLI Monitoring System minimizes blade and roll wear, at the same time maximizing doctoring performance. For more information on the PLI monitoring System, contact a Kadant Web Systems Sales Engineer.
