Solving the Problem
Engineers have had some success over the years in developing continuous crepe blades for lightly loaded wet crepe applications. However, higher loaded dry crepe applications have remained a problem due to the load required to move the blade across the roll.
Kadant Web Systems' Continuous Crepe System has changed all that. By using a linear direct -pull motion, the System is able to successfully isolate tension and bending stresses and advance the blade across the web.
Essential Components
The System features 7 essential components:
- Doctor back structure with linear bearings and special blade holder and adapter.
- Hydraulic power unit with controls.
- Hydraulic oscillation cylinder.
- Left or right blade clamp block assembly with guides and seals.
- Pay-out reel with drive and controls.
- Take-up reel with drive and controls.
- Electronic control package.
How it Works
The System's hydraulic cylinder oscillates the doctor structure with a forward and return adjustable stroke of 1/8 to 3/4 of an inch. In addition to the cylinder, the device also features a hydraulically- activated clamp mechanism. This is rigidly attached to the machine framework, and includes a brake lining material at blade contact points.
The Continuous Crepe System feeds blade stock across the Yankee surface by alternately opening and closing the clamp mechanism in unison with the oscillation motion. By coordinating the opening and closing sequence of the clamp mechanism with the hydraulic oscillation cylinder, the blade is transported across the face of the roll in a series of strokes. In this way, each return movement of the doctor back will advance an increment of blade stock across the face of the roll. Friction forces within the doctor holder provide the necessary force to move the blade with the structure. This cyclic transfer of blade stock will continue as long as the clamp closes at the end of each forward stroke of the doctor and opens when the doctor is moved the maximum return distance.

Maximum Flexibility
Because each Continuous Crepe System is custom- designed for a particular application, there are a variety of control schemes for changing coils. The System offers a range of capabilities that can be adjusted to best meet the individual needs of a specific machine.
- Oscillation - While its main purpose is to continually feed fresh blade material across the face of the roll, the System can be adjusted to function in a normal oscillation mode. This is done by programming the clamp mechanism to remain open, and may be used at any time to stop the advance of the blade.
- Blade Movement To Tending Side Or Drive Side - For maximum flexibility, the System is designed to work in either the left or right direction. Mounting the clamp on the tending side will result in movement of the blade in that direction. Naturally, mounting it on the drive side will have the opposite effect. Simply specify which solution best meets the needs of your particular machine.
- Speed Control - There are several ways to control the speed at which the blade travels across the Yankee. You can adjust:
- The number of oscillation strokes — typically 6 to 10 per minute
- The length of the stroke — 1 / 8 " to 3 / 4 "
- The ratio of the clamp application to the oscillating stroke — typically 1: 1, 2: 1, or 3: 1 - Reel Control - A main control panel and two remote stations are supplied for operator interface. And a rapid blade transfer function is provided for use with the doctor unloaded. The reels are also equipped with sensors that indicate the amount of stock used and give a warning signal when blade stock is low. Both front and back reels can easily be changed without breaking the sheet — the only time the sheet is broken is when you thread a new coil.
